Design thinking method is to help anyone come up with creativity ideas and way to their problems. In a better way, to their costumer problems. The majority of time we use this method for the benefit of other more than for our benefit.

Here is a couple of videos to help explain a little deeper what is design thinking.

The last for 4 weeks I have been working with other 11 college students to on the topic of domestic violence. We had to use design thinking to find a way to approach and help those in that find themselves in this terrible situation.

Our group came with these following question:

How can we empower 14-21 years old so they can recognize, prevent, and break the cycle of abuse and develop uplifting relationships?

When we are talking about using design thinking we are usually talking about formulating a question that follows this formula: How might we __(what)__ __(for whom)__ __(so that)__.

As we have this question developed we then can know, or come up with outside of the box ideas, how to answer such question answer.

This was not our first question, neither is the last one, we re-did our question several times. For us to approach any situation we need first to empathize with those involved on that situation.

Brene Brown explains very well the difference in between empathy and sympathy here.

Empathizing with your target audience is a very important step, I would go as far to say that is the most important step. Because if you cannot put yourself in the shoes of those you are trying to reach how do you expect to be able to help them?

During our 4-week project, we spent most of the time empathizing with those that suffered, or are suffering, from domestic abuse and those that are the cause of such trauma. For that we need to get to know the people we are trying to help, we need to know how their situation is like, what they feel.

It was these next two steps for empathizing that made me get out of my comfort zone. There were asking questions and researching. They may not seem too much, but for design thinking to work on its finest you need be asking question after question, dig really deep to gain a complete understanding of the situation and understand what is going on with your audience.

Sometimes, many time in my case, you hit a wall. You come to a point where you don’t have, or can’t come up with the answers anymore, that you discuss and discuss put can’t come up with a solution or understanding. That happen because we run out of knowledge, understanding, for our target audience—at least that is what happened with me.

Research helps overcome that. It did help me overcome some walls as I gain knowledge of why people abuse their families, how is the environment of someone being abuse, how they think, and etc. But the most important research you can do is listen to those that have been or are in your target audience.

My group hit a big wall, we couldn’t go forward in any way, even when we did do a lot of research on the topic. We were only able to overcome it because we had someone who grew up in a domestic violence home come and share his story with us. It was that moment that I learned how essential is to listen to your audience, ask questions to them, and by doing this you can come to empathized with them.

After that event, we were able to come up with the question previously mention, then we moved on to brainstorm ideas of how to answer it in an effective way and how we could test it.

At the end, we develop a program we could present at high school to help youth to see that they have the power to leave a abusive relationship. Our program was fun and interactive at the same time it made such a dark subject not as uncomfortable to talk about and it would give a place where those suffering of domestic abuse could go for help.
